Mel’s Diner

Sharp Knives, Raw Meat and Fire

I was in the grocery store last night and I went to the meat case looking to see if there were any beef shanks on sale (for stock).  Next to the ground beef, there was a packaged meatloaf mix.  Now, I have to give the company credit for not hiding anything, for on the front it said it contained, “beef, pork, veal and natural flavors”.  Natural flavors?  Shouldn’t meat have it’s own, built in flavors?  How bad is this that “extra” flavors needed to be added?  What is happening to us?

  1. I am so glad to see a post on this. It frightens me to read labels in the meat section of the grocery store. It seems like everything is getting injected with chemicals and sodium for either tenderization or flavor.
It has made me seek out an actual butcher here in Alamosa to have another source for meats.
